About Mary:
Mary Lipian is a California-based artist, who grew up in Atherton, and attended Laurel and Encinal Elementary Schools, and later completed her undergraduate degree at Yale University and earned two graduate degrees in Psychology, at the University of California, Los Angeles and at Boston University.
Mary studied art at the San Francisco Art Institute; and has exhibited in Italy (Florence and Genoa); in France (Paris and Senlis); in Monaco (Monte Carlo); in Japan (Tokyo) in the United Kingdom (Eastbourne); and in the United States (San Francisco).
She primarily paints with oil on linen and her paintings are intended to capture the pulses of cities, from London and Cannes to San Francisco to New York and Los Angeles. The paintings are set within a film noir. Buildings and empty facades, often with neon signage, glow in a dimmed half-light while any sign of life inside is obscured by color dancing across the windows; in other paintings the colors can be seen soaring through the sky.
